Mentorship

We encourage School faculty, staff, post-docs, alumni, and students to provide guidance and insight to others by becoming a mentor. Mentors are frequently needed on campus and out in the San Diego community. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, whether it be for UC San Diego affiliated students or staff or local students in the San Diego community, please fill out the EDI Ideas Form.

Community Outreach

Are you a faculty member, staff, or student who is interested in participating in community based outreach programming on behalf of the School? Are you a community member who is interested in interacting with researchers, faculty, staff, or students from the School of Biological Sciences? UCSD-National City Restorative Education About Plants

The UCSD-National City Restorative Education About Plants (REAP) is a community gardening program that addresses food insecurity in National City, San Diego and promotes scientific engagement. Please contact Sahana Kuthyar ([email protected]) for more information.

Recruitment

The School is seeking faculty, staff, and students who are interested in promoting inclusive excellence through the recruitment of diverse students, staff, and faculty. Recruitment efforts include, but are not limited to, participating on hiring committees and undergraduate and graduate student selection committees, representing the School at national and regional diversity-related sciences conferences, and participating in programmatic student research partnerships with HBCU (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and HSI (Hispanic Serving Institutions) campuses.

EDI Committee

The EDI Committee is comprised of faculty representatives from each section, staff representatives, and graduate and undergraduate student representatives. It is the School's central point for all diversity and inclusion related matters pertaining to students, faculty, and staff. Internships

STARTneuro

STARTneuro trains and mentors diverse transfer students as they enter neuroscience research beginning with a 10-week summer research training program and provides ongoing mentorship and workshops to prepare students for PhD programs. ROOTS

Research Opportunity and Orientation for Transfer Students (ROOTS) is a new NSF-supported initiative by the School of Biological Sciences to help incoming transfer students achieve significant research experience at UC San Diego through building basic research skills, meeting UC San Diego faculty and obtaining positions as undergraduate researchers upon entrance to UC San Diego.
